Another big project from the past – 1990-The Birmingham NIA

9 09 2009

Whilst at Percy Thomas Partnership in the early 90s I was heavily involved as one of the principle architects on the design and construction of the Birmingham National Indoor Arena working jointly with HOK Sport ( George Heinlein at the time) and Laing Construction – principally Brian Cheshire managing  and David Shakeshaft cost controlling – good guys and still in Birmingham.
Not many people know but all end concrete end beam indents are the 4 square motif often used by Charles Rennie Mackintosh ( one of my favourite architects) – Unfortunately the concrete was never covered in mineral paint as it was unnaffordable and it looks a bit worse for wear now but still a commercially successful project for the City of Birmingham.niania2
